Hail Storm 4-11-2001 - Florissant, MO Click on Images for Larger View TSent: Wednesday, April 11, 2001 12:53 AM Subject: Florissant Hail Damage Report Hello Mom and Dad survive the worst hail storm ever to hit their house. Glad they went to the basement as this storm was probably tornadic at various stages of it's life. Just happened to not be when it was over Florissant, luckily. It didn't appear to be much when I got even on New Florissant road. Wasn't until i hit St. Catherine and Paddock did I see the litter from the trees and plants all over the road. On St. Catherine, there was a car with its windows smashed. People were working on cleaning it up. Then as I turned onto Paddock, there was not a war zone, but littered streets with sticks and plant material and people outside working on their cars and houses and windows. The storm came from the West, so all the wind and hail blew very hard from the west. So the front of our house got damaged and the backsides of the house was fine. Depends on how the house was situated. The blue car was in driveway and brown in carport. The shed in carport and back of brown car was caked in debris from the trees, as well as the front of the house. The gutters are all dented on the top and on the sides. The window treatments in front of house or the outside covers around the windows are all pelted in. One screen is broke. No broken windows on these new windows! Unlike the Midyetts, 3 houses up, no tree protection and older windows. All their front house windows were broke. One went through the outside window and inside window. The Curran house has some broken siding. The ground is littered with evergreen. The evergreen took a serious beating. The blue car has the driver side mirror broken and the left tail light is bashed out. The car is littered with dents. You know, like the silver car from the early 80's. Yes, dents all over it. Brown car survived. The roof items are all pelted and dented that are metal. The air exhausts and what not. The shingles are broken on the edges by the gutters. On the roof, there are pelts all over where the shingles are some what destroyed or messed up. Dents in the wood on top of the roof. Not broken but there are dents on the roof. And this has caused the leaking in the MIDDLE OF THE BASEMENT. Yes, the MIDDLE! There were 4 leaks in the middle of the basement. There's nothing upstairs, but the water made it from the roof down through the walls, to the floor of the upstairs and then leaked to the floor of the basement. That's the theory. THAT IS WEIRD how that happened. That's still a mystery unraveling. So the roof damage is causing leaks in the basement. The hail was indeed golf ball and some even bigger. I didn't get to Florissant until and hour or hour half after the storm. The hail was still all over in the grass and preserved when under all the evergreen shreds. I got a bag of it. You can see in the pictures how big it is. But mom and dad didn't get as much damage as some of our neighbors. Well first, mom's plastic pots on the side of the house are all destroyed. I guess the blew out and then were pelted with holes. The old brown gutter still sitting over there on the side of the house was littered with holes in it. It was plastic material. So the gutter and siding and anything plastic was damaged. The midyett's ford Taurus had their back window bashed in with hail in the car. One mirror was completely broke off but mirror not broken. The other mirror was broken like the blue acclaim mom and dad have. Midyett's car is a mess. Plus littered with dent's. Chris's new truck is littered with dents. Then the windows of their house was all broke. The plastic furniture in their back patio was destroyed with holes in the table and chairs. Telephone wire down but still working. There's roof and gutter and siding damage everywhere. So that's the scoop. Hope you enjoyed my post storm report if you read it all. If I had a video camera, I would be able to do better footage of Monday night hail and damage video from Florissant. But I don't have one. It would sure make a nice wedding gift. ;-) Hint. Hint. Digital if you don't mind. ;-) You'll have to settle for 3 pictures. I will get more up on the website later. Will, you were lucky to not leave tonight for Kansas City. You might be hurt! Windows bashed in. WOWSERS. It was a doosey. I know you all checked in with mom and dad, but I don't think they told you how much damage the cars and houses sustained. So I think I covered it. It was bad. I missed it, but for the first time, I'm happy to have missed a storm in Florissant...because my grand am would have not faired well with the slanted windows and there's room for just one car in the carport. It appears that cars with slanted windows with 45 degree angles got their windshields smashed. But cars like the old acclaim has 85 degree angle windows and so no broken windows. As for the blue car, who knows, dad will probably still drive it around. What's a lil red tape on the brake lights and a broken mirror! ;-) NO, hopefully dad can get some money from insurance company to pay for mirror and tail light. Who knows, maybe dad will buy a new car because the acclaim took a beating as well as other parts of Florissant. Take care and watch out for more storms this week. This were the stronger than Monday's storms. Who knows, maybe Wednesday will be even worse. Hopefully not because this is a big headache up hear in Florissant. |
