I got started on attracting hummingbirds to my backyard in St. Louis, Missouri in the Summer of 2001. I put feeders out that July-September and was dazzled by the flying antics of the hummingbirds who just showed up and started drinking from our two feeders. I've been hooked ever since. I've been working on my backyard to attract as many hummingbirds as possible. I've garnered my information from websites, books, and hummingbird emailing lists. My backyard in St. Louis, Missouri attracts Ruby-throats for only about a half the year as this location is a Zone 5 bordering Zone 6. April is the earliest you can see them in the St. Louis area and October is generally the latest sightings. Although some sightings occur in November and beyond, but that is rare, and often they are different species of hummingbirds, usually the Rufous hummingbird.
